I'm also an immigrant, and I discovered the ladies when I was still in academia, amid woke-speak and the #resistance, so their incisive & often funny takedowns of the libs felt refreshing. However, as time went by, I got an inkling that their racist, classist & trad-leaning “jokes” weren't so ironic, and I stopped listening to the pod. But I'd still tune in every now & then to see what they were up to. (After all, I live in a cow-town & they did introduce me to cool artists, writers & whatnot :) Unfortunately, not only did they lose their edge & humor & maxxed their vapid personas, but they became a megaphone for the most noxious brand of American nihilism. In other words, the shtick wasn't funny anymore.
The last drop for me, too, was Dasha's appearance on "Doomscroll." It's so irresponsible of them to deny their political influence by hiding behind the "dumb bitch/mom brain," or in Dasha's case, "just an entertainer" shield. I remember when they had Amber A'Lee Frost in the show, and at one point, Amber said: "Anna, when did you become so antisocial?" to which Anna replied: "I'm not" – followed by some variation of: “I'm just a realist and I don't fool myself regarding human nature” (people = garbage.) I 💯 disagree with Dasha’s take that we become naturally more conservative as we age. If anything, I think we become more pro-social.
At the end of the day, I felt conflicted about voicing my alarm because the pile-on they were getting was so misogynistic & because I think we’ve all felt a mixture of awe & envy (Dasha is so cute!), so I questioned my motives. Long-story short, this 2-part series was very validating, and I'm glad you're brave enough to face the RS fans/goons.
Love the podcast and really appreciate this unplanned mini series on Red Scare. I used to listen to them like five years ago because I thought they were cool (I'm 38 male, and did not grow up in the US). However in 2020 I stopped listening to them. Not because of some great insight or anything, just from a gut feeling I knew in some place I did not want to hear their cynicism about the BLM protests of the summer of that year. In some way, at least emotionally I knew I will not like what they had to say. I have no clue if I was wrong or not, but after that I heard only a handful of episode. So, even though the thesis of them loosing their mind during the pandemic makes a lot of sense, perhaps there was already something there even before COVID?
yeah i think there was no real transformation — not deep down where it counts. reminds me of something. we need to repost the first ep we did, which was on russia today and its dominant culture of political cynicism and the negation of politics. it was right during the blm period that we recorded it. red scare really fits into that world.
