Nono, thank you. It's very important what you're doing, putting into words the sham we've always been led to ignore, yet at all levels should've sensed. Yay for your baby, hope you two are as okay as possible in this heartless mess.
Hard time to be bringing a new child into the world... sorry for your problems, it's the kind of thing that make people 'go postal' (or would if we still have a postal system... Geezus!!). Doesn't your landlord need some kind of reason beyond 'mo money' to pull a Simon Legree? Anyway, best of luck, good fortune & congrats on the new addition.
Some positive news for your weekend reading...see if you can stay in California for a bit longer...it looks like it's a state that has turned the corner in virus terms, from what I can see:
Just saw your most recent post on this. Ridiculous - if he was planning to sell the unit, I've been reading that real estate in LA hasn't taken a hit at all during the pandemic, but it would seem that he intends to rent it for more than he's currently getting from you and/or the first tier lessor. Who's going to be able to afford to rent the place, much less at $1,000 more than what he's already getting during the middle of record unemployment and a pandemic that (kinda) caused it? So far as I can see in our own very expensive Texas city and even more expensive neighborhood, "For Lease" signs have stayed up for MONTHS all around the area; duplexes, condos, apartments and a few homes (most SFHs in the ZIP code start at $700,000 or more, so I couldn't imagine how much it costs to rent one, LOL).
Here's the other thing. Look around in the various neighborhood sites (NextDoor, FB groups) and Reddit - EVERYONE who can afford it is remodeling during the pandemic. Finding contractors (here anyway) is more difficult than it's ever been! I guess your ultimate landlord, being a property owner in LA, probably "has people" for that, but it took us forever to find a guy to come in and demo one of our bathrooms, install the tub and sink and let us finish the rest on our own. We did it on the cheap because both of us still have our jobs (knock on wood) and knowing that if one of us DOES lose our job we'll probably have to sell and start renting again. Remodeled bathrooms are one of the biggest returns on investment if you own a home you plan to sell (we don't own it, the bank does, of course).
Anyway, best of luck to you in court and keep us posted. Your wife is right - very Dickensian (timing and all) - why wouldn't this landlord just come to a reasonable deal with you that let you stay until the end of the lease to the person from whom you're subletting? Or why not until at least after the end of the pandemic? Sounds like an asshole.

Yasha, does *anyone in power* up there in the US have any clues on how this all resolves?
Even down in "middle-earth" things are grim...this** came out last week.
Nothing remotely as bad as what the USA experiences, but still...many are scrambling for cognitive dissonance pills down here in NZ at the moment, as we have national elections in six weeks time.
** "...Among those in the poorest half of the country, meanwhile, the average person owns assets worth just $46,000 and has debts of $33,000, leaving them with a net worth of $12,000. They have negligible wealth in trusts and on average just $4,000 in the bank, leaving them vulnerable to sudden financial shocks..."
"...Overall, the wealthiest 10% have 59% of all the country’s assets, and the middle classes around 39%. That leaves the poorest half of the country with just 2%...."

Hi Yasha and Evgenia

I wish we had that kind of data available in my country...it gets published with a six month lag!!

Jason, thanks for the Cody Johnston video.

Nah. No one gives a fuck about anyone here. It’s bleak. Vote Biden! Vote Blue!

Friedman and Hayek have a lot to answer for.
