I’m gonna be hosting a talk with my friend Anthony Galluzzo next week in Williamsburg. He’s launching his book — Against the Vortex: Zardoz and Degrowth Utopias in the Seventies and Today. It’s a critique of our society’s techno-utopianism and an intellectual history of anti-industrial utopian movements and thinkers, as well as an attempt to chart a new way forward past our dead-end industrialized society.
Here’s the info: It takes place on Sunday January 14, 2024 at 6pm. It’s at Spoonbill on 218 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn — a great little indie bookstore in a Williamsburg that has now fully been taken over by corporate lux chains and waterfront condo bros. Here’s the Facebook event page, if you’re still on that boomer site.
Come by if you’re in town!
We had Anthony on the pod a couple of times in the past. Check out those eps here and here. And…buy his book!

I wish I could be there to hear it, but I'm nowhere near New York...I'm extremely curious to know what the few other people interested in a post- industrial, post- capitalism future are thinking. And why I never hear about a small-scale agrarian future anymore as a solution, not that it was ever a huge sell at any point
Wheee! Zardoz!
I taped the movie last year and still have to watch it, but I'm looking forward to seeing a hairy Sean Connery in a crimson diaper!
